Mrs. S, Maylands

Home-made brunch - and back on the bandwagon!

Mrs. S, MaylandsMrs. S opened just around the corner from David’s house some months back, and has been frequented most mornings en route to the train station for coffee. Whilst various Breakfast Clubbers had dined there, never with a camera or with our blogging hats on. Not this particular morning: it’s time to get back on the blogging bandwagon, dear readers!

Mrs. S is one of the many new establishments popping up around the Whatley Crescent/Eighth Avenue area in Maylands. The high-ceilinged, pastel coloured space has been cosistantly packed since it opened, serving food with a distinct home-made feel. The selection of cakes and other sweet treats may clog the arteries with one bite, but oh – it’s worth it. This particular morning we were in for brunch and coffees. With five in the party we had to wait around for a table to become available, and were popped in the window before being moved to a larger table. Food and coffee is quick here, so customer turnover is high and you won’t have to wait long.

The frequently-changing menus are presented in kitschy Golden Circle books (nostalg-o-rama!). The breakfast menu has the usual range of crowd pleasers (bacon, eggs, a sweet option, porridge and so forth), but all with that Mrs. S touch. On to our orders:

  • 1x Baked beans w/ poached eggs and rocket on toast – $15
  • 1x Baked beans w/ poached eggs and rocket on corn bread – $15
  • 2x Mushroom brushetta w/ poached eggs – We forgot to write down the price…
  • 1x Gingerbread w/ poached pears and orange mascarpone – Ditto! It was ~$13
  • Coffee+++ – $3.50-$4.50ea

It wasn’t long after ordering before our coffees arrived – they do a good job in this regard using high quality beans, milk, and a qualified barista. The decaf (gross, but someone is on detox) hit the spot!

Meals arrived in about 15 minutes, enough time to catch up on the usual post-week shenanigans. Speaking of shenanigans, Mrs. S is BYO so if you’re up for a boozy breakfast, bring the champers! Gaggles of woman (the pleasant kind, not the plastic-penis tiara kind) can regularly be found sipping champagne over breakfast. Note to self: next time, bring bubbly.

Meals are beautifully presented and the perfect size – you’ll leave feeling full but not Ineedanapandwillhavetoberolledout full. No cans in sight when it comes to the baked beans: these are home made with a mix of chickpeas, borlotti beans and kidney beans. Hidden within are a couple of blocks of danish fetta. The tomato base has a tiny bit of kick at the end which rounds out the meal. Happy to report no gross, uncooked egg white floating around the plate – eggs on all dishes were cooked to perfection.

Laura chose the sweet option, and gleeful destroyed her plate of ginger bread with poached pears. Her only complaint was that the orange mascarpone didn’t have enough orange flavour, and came across as just a little bland. The spoon slid through the poached pears with ease. Reports on the mushroom brushetta were two thumbs up from both Breakfast Clubbers: big, hearty mushrooms with freshly made pesto and topped with rocket.

Visit Mrs. S for breakfast. You won’t be disappointed.

Highs: Nearly everything is home made, perfect sized meals, eggs and coffee to perfection, BYO for a boozy breakfast
Lows: Orange mascarpone was a tiny bit of a let down
Our Breakfast Club’s Final Score: 8/10 coffee mugs
